Today marks the 100th anniversary of the day the Titanic sank on its
maiden voyage in the North Atlantic Ocean, resulting in the deaths of
more than 1,500 passengers and crew. About 700 people survived after the
ship hit an iceberg on its trip from Southampton, England, to New York
City and sank two hours, 40 minutes later.
No one could have felt the impact of such a grand scale disaster than someone who lost 10 of his relatives out of 11 who embarked on the voyage. Only one survived. Meet Russ Matar whose great-great uncle survived and lived to tell the story to the Times-Herald newspaper in 1934. “It was terrible. Everybody was nearly crazy,” John said in an interview
with the Port Huron (Mich.). Most of us would not have known about that ill fated ship if not for the epic block buster movie titled Titanic.
