Amanda Knox, the American college student who spent nearly four years in prison in Italy after being convicted of helping to kill her roommate, burst into tears in court in Perugia on Monday after learning the verdict had been overturned.
In its ruling, the Italian appeals court also cleared Raffaele Sollecito, a co-defendant and Ms. Knox's former boyfriend, of the 2007 stabbing death of Ms. Kercher, 21, who shared an apartment with Ms. Knox when they were students in Perugia.
Ms. Knox, 24, from Seattle, was returned to prison to collect her possessions and left soon afterward. The sensational and lurid case had made Ms. Knox notorious in Europe and at home.
