President Goodluck Jonathan has ignited a furore over his desire to leave a lasting legacy of single term for future presidents and governors from 2015.With this proposition, he has opened a floodgate of both incendiary opposition and fawning support for his pet project.
But what does Jonathan want?According to his spin doctors, the constitutional amendment will restrict future presidents and governors to a single of six year term. Also, it will benefit members of the National and State Assemblies and whose tenure would be raised a little notch above what is the norm even though it is silent on how long.Interestingly, Jonathan has ruled himself out of contention for 2015.The president in all wisdom believes that the perennial instability in our body polity stems from the desire for second term.Meaning that, the quest to complete the constitutional eight years by presidents and governors has been responsible for political rascality bedevilling Nigeria for so long. By removing this plank, the animal urge to always go for the eight year term limit will naturally reduce.
